Drowning victim identified

A Conyers woman who fell into the rapid waters at Factory Shoals Park late Monday morning was found dead, a victim of a drowning.

According to Newton County Sheriff's Office 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, a call for help went out at roughly 11 a.m. when a group of the friends that the women, identified as 35-year-old Marie Elaina Carley, was with, called 911 after the she accidentally fell into the water and they were unable to find her.

Mitchell says the NCSO, Newton County Fire, and the Newton County Dive Team all converged on the stretch of the Alcovy River where Carley was last seen. At roughly 4:45 p.m., officials located Carley, not far from where she went into the water.

Though the incident is still under investigation, Mitchell referred to is as "an unfortunate accident."

Carley was transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation where an autopsy to determine exact cause of death will be performed.
