Drivers advised to avoid I-20 this weekend

Continuing construction on Interstate Highway 20 in the metro Atlanta area - one on the westside; one eastside and two in downtown Atlanta - will again make I-20 travel problematic this weekend, if the weather remains fair. The Georgia Department of Transportation is advising motorists simply to stay off this interstate if possible.

With a good chance of scattered thunderstorms throughout the Metro area all weekend, however, work may occur intermittently or be postponed completely.

Georgia DOT encourages motorists to consult 511ga.org before travelling to learn what work may be taking place. If all work proceeds as scheduled, motorists should utilize alternate routes to avoid long delays in these construction zones:

• On I-20 in Rockdale and Newton counties, two westbound outside (right) lanes between Almon and Alcovy roads will be closed continuously from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. Long delays are expected. In addition, a separate bridge rehabilitation project east of Covington will resume work Sunday afternoon, closing one of two eastbound lanes until 10 a.m., Friday, June 13.
• In Douglas County, two eastbound I-20 lanes between State Route 5 and Liberty Road will be closed from 9 p.m., until 5 a.m., each overnight (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Again, significant back-ups are probable.
• Downtown and into DeKalb County, overnight restriping of I-20 eastbound between Boulevard and Gresham Road continues; three lanes will be closed from 8 p.m., Friday, until 6 a.m., Saturday; then again during the same overnight time periods Saturday and Sunday.
• In addition downtown, emergency bridge repairs on the Westview Drive overpass above I-20 will require double I-20 lane closures in both directions between 9 p.m., Friday, and 6 a.m., Saturday, between Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive and Langhorn Street.

Also, overhead sign work on Interstate Highway 285 both northbound and southbound in Cobb County between Cobb Parkway and Riverside Drive will require intermittent double-lane closures during the weekend, but two lanes will always remain open to traffic. Other sign work will close one NB lane from 6 a.m., until, 5:30 p.m., Saturday, between Atlanta Road and New Northside Drive.

In addition to this work, from 7 p.m., Friday, until 5 a.m., Monday, one lane of traffic in both the north and southbound directions on U.S. Highway 41/State Route 3 at Canton Road in Cobb will be closed to traffic for bridge work. Canton Road will be closed entirely at this location from 7 p.m., Friday, until 2 a.m., Saturday.

Other work and routine maintenance will necessitate lane closures on area interstates this weekend. The Department also cautions that incident and emergency repair related closures may be necessary on any route at any time.

All work is contingent upon favorable weather.
