Davis Middle School has a chance at a state title after the Rockdale County school placed in a Georgia FIRST LEGO League regional competition Dec. 14.

Georgia FIRST LEGO League is an annual competition series where fourth through eighth grade students use science and technology to build robotic projects. Edward Middle School hosted a regional competition this year.

The 27 participating teams from the Dec. 14 regional competition included several public and private metro-Atlanta schools. Under the theme "Nature's Fury," students created projects centered on various national disasters. Judging categories were project design, robot design, core values, and robot performance. Teams presented their project to judges, then went head-to-head for three rounds of the robot performance competition.

Nature's Ninjas team from Davis Middle won the third place Champion's Award. DMS will now advance to the super regional competition held Jan. 14, 2014 at Clayton State University.

Students from six Rockdale County schools made up eight teams that participated in the competition. Besides DMS, those participating schools were Edwards Middle, Memorial Middle, Hightower Trail Elementary, Honey Creek Elementary, and Lorraine Elementary Schools.

The Bee Bots team from Honey Creek Elementary won the Innovative Solutions award.

The Patri-Bots team from Edwards Middle won the Strategy and Innovation award.

A team from Memorial Middle won the Gracious Professionalism award.
