Discovering Discovery Point

What do a nurturing environment, top notch childcare professionals, loving attention and just plain fun for kids have in common? Answer: Discovery Point, located at 2250 Ebenezer Road, which just celebrated its one year anniversary in June.

The location is owned and operated by childcare veterans, Tim and Beverly Johnson, who have more than 20 years of combined experience. When asked why they chose to open an early childhood education center, Beverly said, "We always wanted to own our own business, and impact our community positively, by operating this center, it enables us to accomplish both."

She added that Discovery Point appealed to them because of the high level of support offered by the corporate office, located in Norcross.

"They have over 65 locations in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee and give owners tremendous support. The corporation has higher expectations of its owners, as well as teachers," she said. "They have a vested interest in the education of children. Their requirements for their teachers and teacher's assistants are higher than other early childhood education providers."

For instance, to be considered for a position as a teacher or teacher's assistant, applicants must "have a desire to make a difference in the life of children," explained Beverly. The teachers must have a degree in Early Childhood Education or be working on receiving their degree. Teacher's assistants are also encouraged to go further in their careers.

"We help our teacher's assistants in various ways like recommending financial aid opportunities such as grant programs, career counseling, and any other help that would assist them in becoming better educators," said Beverly. "Discovery Point's educational philosophy is that children learn and grow better when they feel loved and nurtured in a structured loving environment. The three A's are always foremost Attention, Affection and Approval."

Some things that make Discovery Point's learning experience a cut above the rest include incorporating extras like sign language, Spanish, art and music appreciation into the curriculum for all students. In addition to the customary infant classes, Discovery Point offers private Pre-K, the scholars program (an after school enrichment and homework assistance program for kids 5 - 14 years old), and enrichment programs for children ages 3 and up, like karate, tumbling and dance.
