A Covington woman died and a Covington man were seriously injured in a single-vehicle fatal crash Saturday night in Newton County on Flat Shoals at Georgia 36.

GSP Troopers were called around 8:45 p.m. to the one-vehicle crash. According to the investigating trooper, a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Steven Aguilar, 22, from Covington was eastbound on Flat Shoals and approaching GA 36 when the vehicle left the roadway on the right side. The driver overcorrected resulting in the truck traveling back onto the roadway, across the westbound lane, off the north shoulder, and hitting a tree with the front passenger side.

Aguilar and a passenger, Cecilia Gonzales, 21, from Covington, were ejected from the vehicle.

Aguilar was transported to Grady by Newton EMS with serious injuries. Gonzales was transported to Atlanta Medical Center where she passed away shortly after arrival.

Alcohol was reportedly a contributing factor to the crash and test results and charges are pending at this time.
