COPS grant hot topic at BOC

IN BRIEF: A federal grant that was an item of contention at last week's Board of Commissioners work session was not on the agenda at today's meeting, but it was discussed during public comments and commissioner comments. Sheriff Jeff Wigington said during the public comments time, "There's been a lot of misinformation." He pointed out the department is qualified to receive the grant and that there are four vacancies currently in the department. He said he was told there was a lack of funding for matching the grant but added that the county could apply for less than the seven deputies allowed in the grant. Commissioner JaNice Van Ness tried to add the grant to the agenda but the motion died for lack of a second. During Board comments, Commissioner Oz Nesbitt said "There are times when certain things don't fit at a particular time." Chairman Richard Oden, who left to attend another meeting, was not present for Board comments at the end of the meeting. Check back to www.rockdalenews.com for the full story.
