Conyers eyes March 6 for Sunday alcohol sales vote

IN BRIEF: The city of Conyers is considering putting the question of allowing Sunday retail alcohol sales to voters on the March 6 ballot, along with the presidential preference primary. However, at their Wednesday night meeting, the city council tabled that referrendum request pending "legal issues" to be worked out, according to the city attorney Mike Waldrop.

The local three-member elections board, which would have to approve placing the question on the ballot, has been called before Rockdale County Superor Court Judge Sidney Nation on Friday. Some of the questions to be addressed include whether or not they have authority to do anything until they appoint the third member and whether they've failed to do their duty in appointing the third member.

In order to place the Sunday alcohol package sales question on the March 6 ballot, the city council would have to place the request by Nov. 13 and the elections board would have to approve the referredum by Nov. 19, according to Elections Supervisor Cynthia Welch.
