The Rockdale Board of education voted unanimously this month to name the Heritage High School Gym after Coach Curtis Bell.

This was the right thing to do.

Coach Bell spent most of his adult life years crafting the minds and spirits of young people under his charge.

During times of segregation coach Bell coached J.P. Carr High School; after integration he coached at Heritage High for the next 30 years.

Coach Bell died three years ago, way before we wanted him to be gone.

Our young people need more adults of the caliber of coach Carter Bell in their lives.

We still miss him and we are grateful for his efforts and integrity in dealing with the children of Rockdale County.
