All 56 children from Burke County Middle School, who were injured in the chain collision involving six school buses on Saturday, are back home in Waynesboro.

Angela Anthony, the school bus driver who had to be cut out of the bus wreckage with the Jaws of Life and airlifted, was released Monday from Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

While originally expected to be released Sunday, Anthony was the most critically injured in the accident.

"She's real bruised and swollen," said Amy Nunnally, spokeswoman for the Burke County School System.

The injured children were taken to four area hospitals where they were mostly picked up by their parents, Nunnally said. The remaining students were taken home by a bus escorted by Burke County Middle School Principal Rudy Falana late Saturday night.

Approximately 200 students, parents and administrators were headed to Six Flags Over Georgia as a reward for performing well on the CRCT.

The accident occurred when one bus slowed to merge in a construction zone. The following bus struck it in the rear, setting off a chain reaction crash. A passenger car was the last vehicle in line and struck the rear of the last bus.

The Georgia State Patrol said the total injury count from the crash was 65.
