A green Volvo sedan crashed into a power pole, causing the top of it to snap off, on Salem Road near Golfview Road around 2 p.m. today.
Salem Road southbound is closed between Golfview Drive and Country Walk Way. Traffic is being rerouted through Avondale Springs subdivision. The Rockdale County Sheriff's Department is encouraging all motorist to avoid Salem Rd until approximately 7 p.m.
According to witnesses, the car involved in the accident was heading north on Salem Road, swerved out of the lane, turned to avoid oncoming traffic, and slid across the grassy area into the pole.
"There were a little bit of sparks," said Qualik Taylor about when the car collided with the pole. "We heard a lot of popping."
The driver was reportedly conscious. When two witnesses helped the crash victim out of her car before authorities brought her to the hospital, they said she seemed "disoriented."
Power is reportedly out in the Avondale Springs and Country Walk at Fieldstone subdivisions closest to the accident. Crews from Snapping Shoals EMC estimated power would be down for about three or four hours. The repair crew would have to wait for a new pole to arrive on scene and swap it out with the damaged one.
