Brush fires break out Tuesday
firefight-2

It's not officially summer yet, but it's already blazing hot in more ways than one.

Rockdale County firefighters battled brush fires Tuesday afternoon in the dry, hot, windy conditions.

The Rockdale County Fire and Rescue department received a call around 12:30 p.m. about a battled a brush fire near Lake Rockaway Road and Lester Court. The fire, located in areas of heavily wooded brush between residential areas, covered about two acres.

About 13 firefighters responded and battled the fire for about three and half hours, according to interim Deputy Chief Dan Morgan. No one was injured and no structures were threatened, said Morgan.

The Georgia Forestry Commission also came out with a bulldozer to create a fire break.

Another grass fire also broke out on the corner of Klondike Road and Iris Drive, in front of the Just Brakes business around 4 p.m. An engine on its way back from the Lake Rockaway fire responded to the grass fire and had it under control within minutes.
