Holly Bowie, former legal affairs manager for the county, recently announced her bid for county Clerk of Courts on the Republican ticket in 2012.

She said she made the decision after being approached by person after person in the legal field.  “It’s really humbling for people to come to you and ask you to do this,” she said. “I don’t take this lightly.”

She said there was a need for someone who understood the legal field and the judicial system in that position. “The clerk’s office is the hub of the legal system,” she said. “This is a job I will be able to do and do with integrity.”

She cited 19 years of legal experience, including as a paralegal, and 10 years working with the county.

“The voters have to look at this as employers,” she said. “I urge them to look at the qualifications of the candidates and ask themselves if they would hire this person for a position with no experience in that field.”

Bowie resigned from her position with the county in November 2009 after a decade with the county and now works as a paralegal for the DuBose Massey Bair & Evans law firm in Conyers. She was employed as a paralegal with the firm Maddox, Nix, Bowman and Zoeckler from 1992 to 1999. She obtained her Paralegal Certificate from the American Institute for Paralegal Studies in 1993. She also currently serves as secretary with the Domestic Violence Task Force in Rockdale County.

Bowie previously ran for Clerk of Court in 2008, losing the Republican primary to attorney Sharon Barksdale. The Democratic nominee, current Clerk of Courts Ruth Wilson, won the 2008 general election.

She said she was “heartbroken” after losing the primary in 2008. Last time she ran, she said she was overly cautious in how and when she campaigned because she was a county employee.

“I have more freedom with that this time,” she said. She added that she planned to win.

Bowie, a Covington native and graduate of Newton County High School, is married to Richard Bowie. They have two children, Madison and Margaux, who both attend Rockdale County High School. The family attends First Baptist of Conyers. Richard and Holly serve in the One Heart ministry for youth.
