The Rockdale County Board of Elections announced the two finalists for the vacant at-large position on three-member board of Elections.

The two sitting board members agreed on finalists Cary Bond and Russel D. Moore, IV.

The at-large position, which is traditionally non-partisan, was previously held by board Chairman Don Cargill who retired on April 30 after 18 years of service.

The two sitting members are Democratic member Garvin Haynes, who has served on the board for three years, and Republican member Hilda Westmoreland, who began serving on the board earlier this year. Haynes, was recently appointed to the Chair by Westmoreland and himself. All three terms expire June 2011.

The Board of Elections accepted applications up through May 14 and narrowed the list to five applicants, one who withdrew prior to being interviewed.

The interviews were conducted in closed session, and, in accordance with the Open Records Act, the Board of Elections must wait at least 14 calendar days before making its decision on the at-large member. The Board reportedly plans to make a decision by mid-August. If no decision is reached, the process will reportedly begin again.

The Board of Elections oversees all voter registration and conducts all Federal, State, County, and local elections in Rockdale County. The two-member board will oversee the July 20 primary.
