Well-deserved recognition, live musical performances and comedic ribbing collided at The New Depot Player's annual Wise Awards at Center Street Arts Feb. 8.
"Rabbit Hole" was the evening's big collective winner taking home 10 awards, including Vanessa Outlaw for Performance of the Year, Jay Tryall for the Nancy Florman Director's Award and Best Performances for Supporting Actor Charles Swartout and Junior Actor Devin Bacon. The gifted, versatile Amy LeCates who won Best Lead Actress for "Rabbit Hole" and directed the year's Best Ensemble and Favorite Show, "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change." "I Love You..." scored Best Newcomer and co-Lead Supporting Actor for Matt Tryall.
Perennial hosts, Vince and Cyndi Evans, The Paula Vaughn Volunteer of the Year, quipped of their more "seasoned" take on the matter, "I love you, you're adequate, I can live with that."
"Driving Miss Daisy" won the Best Show award, newly christened The Ron Carley Show of the Year award, for the namesake's long and continuous support of the local arts. Nat Martin, who played "Hoke," took home Best Performance for a Lead Actor. His co-star Bobbie Elzey, who played "Daisy," was presented The Linda Wise Excellence in Theatre Award.
"Driving..." Director Cathe Hall-Payne summed it up in her acceptance speech, "When faced with a decision as to what to do on a night out, please pick live theater or a concert or a symphony or an art exhibit. Faced with the choice of a movie or the arts please pick the arts. The arts need you and you need the arts."
