A sign designating a portion of Sigman Road, from Milstead Avenue to Old Covington Highway in of Brian Mahaffey, a Rockdale County Sheriff's Office Deputy who was killed in the line of duty in 2010, was unveiled on Thursday.
Members of the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office along with County Commissioners, the Mahaffey family and community members gathered in the wind for the unveiling of the honorary road sign erected on Sigman Road to honor Mahaffey.
Investigator Mahaffey was shot and killed in the line of duty while executing an arrest warrant along with fellow deputies on May 8, 2010.
Mahaffey's wife, Diana Mahaffey, said their 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter knew their father was a hero. "They are both very aware that he is a hero, not just to the family but to the community."
The signs were donated by Steven Holmes of Protection Services, Inc. There will be about six signs donated for posting along the road with two presentation models for the family.
"It is gratifying and pleasing," to see the signs up on the road, he said.
Commissioner JaNice Van Ness said the family will be invited to the Board of Commissioners meeting when the resolution designating the road is officially passed. "The most satisfying thing is being able to provide comfort to other people," she said.
