With the days shortening, temperatures cooling and the leaves turning, that can only mean one thing.
The Fall Festival is right around the corner.
This year, the 30th anniversary of the Olde Town Fall Festival, the streets of downtown Conyers will be bustling with more than 70 vendors, crafts, arts, shows, and attractions on Saturday, Oct 23, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The festival was started three decades ago by the Rockdale County Historical Society as a fundraiser and has become one of the longest running and most popular events since."It’s neat that this event can go on 30 years and still have new vendors," said Main Street Conyers Director Monica Coffin. "So every year you’ll have a mix of traditional vendors and something new to compliment it."
A fairly new attraction that organizers are hoping will become a must-see tradition is the Scarecrow Decorating contest.
Organizations decorate a scarecrow in unique ways at $25 per entry. The scarecrows will then hopefully be donated to be auctioned off. Proceeds will go to the domestic violence shelter Project ReNeWal. All the scarecrows will be displayed in the Lewis Vaughn Botanical Garden this year.
"I’m originally from Pennsylvania and we did something like that," said organizer Debbi Krishner. "It was huge. People came by the busloads to see the scarecrows. We hope to make it a tradition that people want to come out and see."
Another event just too-darn-cute to miss — and a great excuse to trot out those creative Halloween costumes for more than just one night — is the Kids Costume Contest, from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Depot Stage, hosted by The Rockdale News. The winners of the Costume Contest will receive tickets to the Georgia Aquarium.
An online costume contest will also be held the week before the festival at www.rockdalenews.com/halloween starting Monday. The winners will receive tickets to Colonel Cobb’s Corn Maze in Oxford. To submit pictures for the online contest, send them to news@rockdalenews.com or call 678-750-5037.
