We are fortunate in Newton County to have an organization that not only tends to needs of the children of our community but our adults, too.
The Covington YMCA, now officially called just the Y, has been serving our community for 29 years.
Thousands of residents have gone through its specialized school programs, kept in shape with the Y's state-of-the-art exercise equipment, played in its sports leagues, swam on the swim teams or just enjoyed family time relaxing by swimming in the cool waters of the pool in the hottest of our summer months.
The Y doesn't turn people away because of an inability to pay: Scholarships are available to ensure that all families have a safe and nurturing place to be.
In order to do this the local Y has held numerous fun-filled fundraisers over the years.
One of the most successful has been the Cheerios Challenge, a road race that is recognized as one of the best in the state.
The 10th annual race will be held on April 16 and will feature a 10K/5K road race and a 1-mile fun run. The race is USATF Certified and is an AJC Peachtree Road Race Qualifier. This year there is $100 prize available for any male or female runner who breaks the course record.
Here is a great opportunity during these tough economic times to show your support to a group of dedicated folks who ensure every day that the needs of all families in Newton County are tended to.
For more information or to register for this fun race stop by the Y, 2140 Newton Drive in Covington, or visit the website cvy.ymcaatlanta.org or you can register for the race at www.axtive.com.
This race is also supported by some caring community sponsors, when you get your free shirt you will see all of their names.
