Wishing Whatley well

Dr. Steve Whatley has served Newton County Schools Superintendent since 2006 and has been an educator for the past 37 years. His last meeting as NCSS's superintendent was on Wednesday night.

He was honored by members of the Board of Education with his portrait, which will be hung in the school administration building next to others who have served our system in that capacity.

Steve Whatley has devoted his life to improving the education capabilities of children; he also has taken the time to be involved in our community.

During his tenure he has been honest, a quiet leader and a true gentleman.

We have not always agreed with every decision the board made under his direction, but we have respected his insight and composure every occasion on which we have disagreed.

The last couple of years have been tough on Whatley - trying his best to keep the programs he has nurtured alive during these tough economic times all the while caring for a very ill close family member.

We admire Steve Whatley for his courage, determination and most of all, his honesty.

The News staff wishes him and his family well during his well-deserved retirement.
