Santa's helpers

Saturday we had the opportunity to show some real Christmas Spirit. We gathered, bright and early, along with the other elves from the Covington Rotary and the Rotary Interact Club from Eastside High school bright and early, and helped Santa load up close to 900 bags of goodies for boys and girls of Newton County.

Santa is fortunate to have such a group as the Covington Rotary to organize and raise money from folks in our community in order to provide this service to families who are having a tough time this Christmas season.

The General Mills Company even donated boxes of cereal to be packed into these special Christmas packages.

After the job was done, the Rotarians divided the packages and, like Santa, delivered their goodies all over Newton County.

Actually, we learned to respect Santa's ability to find the right chimneys. It took us many hours and wrong turns to find our families.

We don't know the circumstances of why those families, some who live in the newest neighborhoods, would need this type of support. What we found is that the smiles of appreciation were real and the feeling of being Santa's helper and bringing such joy was even more real.

As family after family expressed their thanks, some with tears in their eyes, we could only think that it was us who should say thanks for the opportunity to be able give this holiday season.

For the Rotarians and their many supporters in Newton County, thanks and Merry Christmas.
