Sad and shameful

We hope you had a pleasant holiday with your family, although rain put a damper on some of the major activities planned for our area.

Still, any chance we have to spend quality time with our families is cherished.

We had some sad stories in last week’s edition regarding children.

Edward Williams, a Covington man, was arrested and charged with battery under the Family Violence Act and child cruelty. What Williams allegedly did to his son in the name of discipline was at the least hideous.

You can read about this in a story titled "Covington man charged with child abuse’’ at CovNews.com.

In another sad story, Mary Moore of Buford was charged after she reportedly left her young child in a hot car with the windows up. Moore reportedly was shopping in the air-conditioned Kmart while her 5-year-old son was sweating and crying in the car.

She was charged with contributing to the deprivation of a minor, obstruction of an officer and tampering with evidence. Again, this story can be read at CovNews.com.

We are not in the habit of questioning the Good Lord, but it really doesn’t seem fair that people like those mentioned above can be entrusted to have children while there are thousands of people who would be nurturing, caring parents but cannot have children.

We hope that if these two are found guilty, they will rightfully receive the punishment the law allows. That way, they will lose their right to ever put their children in harm’s way again.
