Walker Harris, former mayor, businessman and extraordinary volunteer, died peacefully in his sleep Sunday.

Harris built the Walker Harris Auto Company into the community bedrock, and he personally ran the company for 55 years. Today that company is Ginn Motors.

Harris was never without a tie and a suit; he looked and behaved as a true Southern gentleman. He was much loved and respected by his family and friends.

Throughout his life he gave generously of his time by serving as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, the Lions and as a loyal member of the Elks. He also was an active member of First Baptist Church for 80 years.

It's because of the grit and determination of people like Walker Harris that we are blessed to live in a giving and caring community such as ours.
