We have studied the drag strip proposal for Social Circle further since our last editorial, but we remain opposed to the idea.
Although we encourage the city’s elected officials to look for ways to increase revenue, we do not feel that putting a drag strip so close to an industrial development area — one that is promising so much for the economic future of numerous surrounding counties — is the right thing to do.
Also, the resulting major traffic problems of entering and leaving Interstate 20 would necessitate extra security to ensure the safety of not only local families, but also families that are traveling through our state.
We encourage the planning commission of the city to turn down this proposal at their January meeting and we furthermore recommend that city officials heed that recommendation.
