Our Thoughts: New year, fresh start

The start of a new school year is always a mix of emotions. Not only is the summer wrapping up, and the days of vacation, sun and sand are over, but it is the beginning of a new year with new teachers and new routines.

The Newton County School System started the 2017-2018 school year this past Friday. With that, students are able to overcome the first day jitters and come back Monday ready to take on the year.

It has been a few years since anyone at The Covington News has experienced a first day of school, so we reached out to an expert and asked for a first-hand experience of the first day.

Going back to school is fun and exciting, but a little scary too.

I'm excited about seeing old friends and teachers.  I like to ride the school bus.  I love the new playground outside.  I'm glad I don't have to wear uniforms this year because I switched back to East Newton.

I was nervous that the kids wouldn't like me and the school work would be hard.  I can't believe summer break is over already.  I'll miss sleeping late and playing video games.

My first day at school was a lot of fun.  I made some new friends and had fun playing bean bag games in P. E.  We had pizza for lunch and it was good.   It was hard getting up early this morning but I made it through the day.  I'm excited to be a fifth grader.  I think this will be my best year yet.

We agree with Molly, this year is sure to be the best year yet! We are excited for all of the students in the Newton County School System and for the opportunities that are available for them.

We wish you the best of luck and continued success through the rest of the school year.
