Our thoughts... Make the holidays happier

Thanksgiving is behind us. Now, it’s time to do some serious holiday shopping, or even to set up and decorate the Christmas tree.

It’s going to be just another weekend for many of our neighbors, though; folks who have been hit hard by the Great Recession and are more focused on putting bread on the table than presents under the tree.

And that’s where you come in.

Christmas is a time of giving, and this year we all need to give more of ourselves, our time and talents, to help our neighbors.

We want to help get you started.

Check out today’s Religion section on Page 8A for some ideas on how you can help out, and we also have a roundup of charities and organizations in need of your holiday attention on Page 2A. See Covnews.com, too, and add your group or organization to the list.

We’ve got two big collection boxes in the front of our office at 1166 Usher St. N.W., where we’ll be accepting donations of food, money and toys. We’ll in turn take them to the Salvation Army and the Community Food Bank for distribution during the holidays.

Hard times call for neighbors to pull together. Newton County is a caring community and we can help the least fortunate among us.
