The tragedy that has befallen the country of Haiti and its people has probably touched you in one way or another. Some have contributed clothes, some have sent money and some have just prayed.
As Americans we have always showed a deep compassion when it comes to others in need, especially after natural disasters.
The one thing we can't forget is to show the same compassion for the people of our community, who need warm clothes, food or shelter, especially during the coldest part of winter.
An example of someone taking this initiative and helping her own is Porterdale Councilwoman Linda Finger, who recently led an effort to help a family of five in Porterdale.
She said this type of giving should be done year round rather than just at Christmas time - how true.
You can get involved through your church or be like Linda Finger and simply gather your friends and neighbors together to help those in need. Members of a new subcommittee of the Friends of Porterdale are soliciting donations for the Porterdale CARE (Community Assistance Relief Effort) program in order to help residents in their town.
Christians hold dear the concept "love thy neighbor." We too believe that anything you do to help someone in need will be rewarded in more ways than you can imagine.

• Porterdale CARE donations can be brought to Porterdale's City Hall on Main Street. Checks should be made payable to Friends of Porterdale with "CARE" written in the memo line. For more information, call (678) 859-2496.
