Our thoughts... Holiday cheer

You don't have to spend a lot to enjoy Christmas in Covington and Newton County. There are several outstanding events this week that offer ways to get some holiday spirit at minimal or no cost to your pocketbook.

From 5 to 7:30 p.m. today, check out the annual Twilights at Chimney Park's festive, lighted displays behind the library on Floyd Street. The event is free and will also feature storytellers, the Oxford Youth Choir, a big bonfire for cooking s'mores, and your favorite hot beverages.

It's not Christmas without a production of "The Nutcracker," which will be staged at 3 p.m. today at Porter Hall in Newton High School by the Covington Regional Ballet. Tickets are available at the door and prices range from $5 for students to $22 for general admission.

And at 7:30 p.m. Monday, the Newton County Community Band takes the stage for its annual free holiday concert at the Eastside High School auditorium. The band, under the direction of T.K. Adams, has treated the city to a free Christmas concert for 18 years.
