Our thoughts... Field of dreams

Our struggling economy has caused the delay of many worthwhile projects in our area. One such plan was the downtown development project, which would have included a new hotel and entertainment facility.

One endeavor that is still alive and is very special to many caring people in our community is the construction of the Newton County Miracle Field — so called because it affords handicapped children the opportunity to enjoy America’s favorite pastime with the same excitement and enthusiasm as able-bodied children.

Newton County will be modeled after the first field in neighboring Conyers. There are now similar fields all over the country and in Puerto Rico.

The dream of this very special field has been kept alive by some very determined local volunteers and the good folks at the Newton County Recreation Department.

The Miracle Field complex will be built at City Pond Park. The entire cost of the project is expected to be around $1.7 million. To date $66,000 has been raised.

The organizers currently need another $19,000 to purchase construction documents.

In conjunction with the National Miracle League, a Southern Gospel Concert featuring Gold City, the Talley Trio, Jeff and Sheri Easter and soloist Allison Durham Speer will be singing songs of praise and hope that we are sure will lift your spirits as well as benefit both the national and local Miracle League.

This is a great opportunity for you and your family, or your whole church group, to enjoy some wholesome entertainment and raise money to help the more than 2,400 special needs children, ages 3 to 21, living in Newton County. We commend the Beaver Manufacturing Company and Dr. William Dobbs for their sponsorship of this great benefit.

Remember when you were young and the first warm breezes of spring tousled your hair and made you smile and all you could think of was playing ball. You can make that happen for all of our special needs kids here in Newton County by supporting the Miracle Field project.

Mark your calendar for 7 p.m. March 19 at Heritage Hills Baptist Church in Conyers and call (770) 760-1933 to purchase your tickets to the event.
