There is still mystery surrounding why former Newton High School principal Eclan David resigned from the flagship high school of our county.

However, we think the quick promotion of assistant principal John Ellenberg to the post of interim principal was a wise move.

From everything we know about Ellenberg, he will do a good job of guiding the staff and students through the rest of the year.

If he does what we — and it seems much of the community — believe he can do, then he should be given strong consideration for full status for next year.

The Newton High School community has a building and students it can be proud of; now it needs a principal of the same ilk. Ellenberg, who has been at NHS since 2001, has earned this opportunity. We hope he makes the best of it.
