If you like theater and you have not paid a visit to the Social Circle Theater to catch a play, a local entertainer's performance, or performances by the children in the community, then you have missed a real treat.

Recently, Social Circle Theater students participated in the 2009 Junior Theater Festival. The festival hosted more than 1,400 students this year. Social Circle was represented by a group of 19 young actors ages 8 to 16.

Kaylee Ruark received the Outstanding Individual female award; three students were named to the Festival All-Stars group: Jada Graves, Kaylee Ruark and Omar Scruggs.

Those three students plus Maridth Grimsley were given the opportunity to audition for a part in a Disney DVD.

Another honor bestowed on one of Newton's youth this past week occurred after the Newton County Schools' Countywide Spelling Bee. Gaby Collantes, a seventh grade student at Veterans Memorial Middle School, became champion after she correctly spelled the winning word, orchid.

We salute the children from the Social Circle Theater and Gaby Collantes. It is encouraging to see and hear of the positive things the young people of our community do every day.

We are proud to write about their achievements.
