The Covington City Council made a wise decision in approving a grant writer position for the city. There is so much federal stimulus money floating around right now that it will take a fulltime employee to keep up with what is available and to complete the necessary paperwork.
We are not happy that the government has put the taxpayers of this country into so much debt to create these funds, but it is equally wrong for our community leaders not to try to capture them if they are available.
We agree with the Mayor Kim Carter, who said that the new grant writer would only need to write one accepted grant to pay for the position.
We would like to see that a yearly review be held to judge the accomplishments of the new grant writer and, thereby, determine if he or she is still essential to the success of the city.
