We were more than disappointed to read about the fights earlier this week at the new Newton High School.
Two of the students involved were charged as adults: Ahkeem Payne and Raheem Johnson. The other students involved were juveniles. In total, seven students were arrested.
By all accounts, school officials and law enforcement officers stepped in quickly to stop the fights.
After the story broke, a former NHS student told us that there have always been fights like this, and it was probably because the school has so many students.
We don’t know if that’s been the case in recent years, but we are sure that it wasn’t always so.
The students involved in these disturbances showed no respect for their fellow students, authority or themselves.
This type of behavior should result in the expulsion of the students involved, to demonstrate clearly that there is absolutely no room for this type of behavior in any of our county schools.
