Schools in Newton County and Social Circle started Thursday.

It still is hard to imagine that back in the good old days those schools didn't start until after Labor Day. So if you're part of the group that remembers those days, this editorial is special for you.

Please remember to watch for our little ones darting between cars, full of excitement and not worrying about you driving or about your plans.

Give yourselves plenty more time to get to where you want to go, as school buses have hit the highways and byways, and you can be sure that one will always appear in front of you when you are in a hurry.

Above all, be patient. Our children are the future of the community - do everything you can do to ensure their safety this new school year.
