Another fun weekend

Pleasant autumn weather coupled with the charm of Newton County's landscape and people provide the perfect opportunity to hold weekend events in which the whole family can participate.
Last week the Harvest Weekend in Covington, the City Reunion in Porterdale and the Friendship Festival in Social Circle gave area residents a chance to get outside and chat with friends and neighbors and have fun without wasting a tank of gas driving into Atlanta.
This weekend the Covington Lions Club will host their annual Sherman's Last Burning Barbecue Cook-Off at the Legion Fair Grounds on Friday and Saturday. However, succulent, inexpensive barbecue isn't the only attraction. A beauty pageant, singing contest and dozens of other entertainers and vendors will at the fair grounds.
Porterdale will again draw residents to the banks of the Yellow River with the Yellow River Jam Saturday. The day begins with a river cleanup and continues with bands and musicians of all kinds performing all day and into the night.
We always encourage our readers to think and buy locally. In this time of economic uncertainty it makes sense to keep our money as close to home as possible. Add a few good causes - such as helping the blind and caring for the environment - into the fun and it's like frosting on the proverbial cake.
