Dear Editor: This is a personal opinion, not one representing the Lions Club.
The importance of ‘quality of life' factors - such as our active local arts and cultural organizations - in attracting new employers is emphasized. Those who live in and around Newton County had two marvelous and free opportunities to experience a variety of music this past weekend. The 80-piece DeKalb Symphony Orchestra presented its annual Picnic Pops Concert on the lovely Newton campus of Georgia Perimeter College. The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd hosted a Family and Children's Concert by the 50-member Lauda Musicam of Atlanta. Both conductors provided helpful explanations and the mood at each event was relaxed and celebratory. Sunday's event even included a ‘petting zoo' of the Renaissance instruments. All four of these organizations deserve our thanks for enriching our local cultural scene.
Intergenerational families and groups of friends were obviously enjoying both events. The downside was the low attendance at both performances. Those who stretched beyond usual routines and expectations to sample these experiences were richly rewarded.
