Dear Editor: Bravo to Porterdale for stepping up to the plate and putting on a fabulous Fourth of July celebration. The fireworks were fantastic, vendors hopping, shops full of people and kids enjoying free inflatables. People were spread out everywhere in anticipation of the show. Traffic was handled well, with free event parking sites.

All of this was paid for by donations. No public monies were utilized. Over 7,000 people attended this wonderful event.

Thank you, Porterdale, for a job well done. We look forward to next year.

Bravo to the Arts Association [in] Newton County for the summer evening concerts on the square. The June 12 Grapevine concert was well attended with people of all ages dancing, picnicking and having fun. These events are offered free to the public, and in today's tight economy, it's a godsend to have such quality entertainment at our fingertips. Thank you for these golden opportunities.
