W.K. Lunsford Jr., 90, of Covington, passed away Sept. 22. Mr. Lunsford was a decorated veteran of the United States Army Air Force, served his country during World War II and completed more than 35 combat missions over Europe. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Covington, but had attended Covington First United Methodist Church for many years with his wife, Mary.
Mr. Lunsford was a member of the Christian Fellowship Class, the Senior Saints choir, BPOE Lodge no. 1806, Atlanta Sales Executive Club and the Toastmasters Club. He loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Lunsford truly enjoyed playing bridge with his friends and working in his vegetable garden.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Kiser and Valera Odessa (Adams) Lunsford, his first wife of 52 ½ years Helen A. Lunsford, son W.K. (Bill) Lunsford III and his siblings Mary Virginia Wiley and Oscar M. Lunsford.
Survivors include his wife Mary P. Lunsford; sons and daughters-in-law L.R. (Bob) Lunsford of Covington, Jack and Kathy Lunsford of Jacksonville, Fla., Melinda Lunsford of Bellingham, Wash.; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Lunsford will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Covington with the Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath and the Rev. Jan McCoy officiating and interment following in Covington City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to Covington First United Methodist Church, 1113 Conyers St., SW, Covington, GA 30014.
