Rex J. Mitchell, of Covington, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, at 83 years of age. Mr. Mitchell, married to the love of his life, Barbara, for 62 years, was a godly husband, father, and grandfather. He worked for Hercules, in Covington, and was a faithful member and deacon of Newton Baptist Church. Mr. Mitchell adored his church family and was known for having a pocket full of peppermints for the children. In addition to playing dominos, Mr. Mitchell liked to hunt, fish, and work in his garden. He was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow Harold and Ruby Viola (Smith) Mitchell.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara S. Mitchell; daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Ronnie Cowan, Joy and David Fielding, Rebecca and Dwayne Ratliff; son, Douglas Mitchell; grandchildren, Evelyn and Chad Kellett, Jacob and Afton Cowan, Emily and Ethan Howeth, Delaina Ratliff, Ean Fielding, Colt Ratliff; great-grandchildren, Addie Rose Kellett, Anneliese Kellett, soon-to-be-born, Emma Grace Cowan and Baby Kellett; sister, Doris and Terrell Loyd; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Mary Mitchell, William Mitchell, Johnny and Margaret Mitchell, Melvin and Carolyn Mitchell; as well as several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
A Funeral Service for Mr. Mitchell will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, 2 p.m., at Newton Baptist Church, 720 Jack Neely Road, in Covington, with Pastor Tony Howeth officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park, Covington. Friends may visit with his family at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, Friday, Aug. 11, from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made in Mr. Mitchell’s memory to the Newton Baptist Church Building Fund.
