Mrs. Nellie Byrd Hurst Bryant died Nov. 15 after years of battling Alzheimer's disease. The fifth of seven children of the late Stewart and Phena Hurst, she was born in 1924 in Covington. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Livingston Chapel C.M.E. Church until her health declined. She attended Nixon Chapel Elementary. Mrs. Bryant had a sweet and gentle spirit which brought peace to those around her. She enjoyed spending time in her beautiful garden. In 1942 she was united in marriage to Waymon Bryant, her former husband. Mrs. Bryant had a passion for children and had a role in raising her grandchildren and cared for her great-nieces and great-nephews. Mrs. Bryant was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Robert Lee, Gibson and James Hurst; and her beloved grandson Michael Kaigler.

Surviving are daughters Ann Bryant (Carlton) James and Gloria (Bobby Sr.) Gordon; grandchildren James David Kaigler, Kimberly Kaigler (Hasan) Thompson, Anthony (Gloria) Kaigler Sr., Brandis Gordon (Milton) Baines, Bobby Gordon II; great-grandchildren Marshay Kaigler, Kandice Kaigler, Dakevia Kaigler, Michael Bates, Anthony Kaigler Jr., Madison Thompson, Morgan Thompson; sisters Lizzie Brown, Ruby Camp, Sarah Lawrence; her extended family (the James family); a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and dear friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Livingston Chapel CME Church with the Rev. Valencia Jackson and the Rev. Elsie Bell officiating. Viewing will be at the church from noon to 1 p.m. Interment will be at Flat Shoals Cemetery. Visitation will be at Young Funeral Home today from noon to 9 p.m.
