Neal Harris, 85, of Covington, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016. Harris retired from the Army National Guard after 35 years, where he worked as a maintenance technician. In addition, he retired from the Newton County Sheriff’s Department after 28 years of service. Harris enjoyed breakfast for 36 years at McDonalds with his dear friends. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, hunting and fishing. His greatest joy was time spent with his family, especially his great-grandson Neal, and his beloved dog “Rambo”. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Harris; grandson, Douglas Stevens “Trae” Cash, III; parents, Erastus Reager and Fannie Mae Harris; sisters, Hazel Parrish, Helen Patrick and Jackie Durden. .
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Steve Cash, Susan Gilbert and Tim Huffstickler; sons, Bob Harris, Howard Harris all of Covington; grandchildren, Kasey Cash, Hannah Cash, Patrick and Priscilla Gilbert, Luke Gilbert; great-grandson, Neal Gilbert; brother and sister-in-law, James and Margaret Harris of Monroe; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services for Mr. Harris will be held Saturday, June 18, 2016, 2 p.m., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street in Covington. Len Strozier is officiating and interment will follow in Newborn Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to First Baptist Church Covington, 1139 Usher Street NE, Covington, GA 30014.
