Harwell-Wheeler Funeral Home    Hopkins Mr. George P. Hopkins, 86 of Covington died January 9, 2010 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, Georgia. Mr. Hopkins was born in Newton County to the late James F. and Fannie Hopkins, Sr. He was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, which he dearly loved.  He was very active in his church serving as treasurer and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Hopkins proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII in England, France and Belgium. He retired from Scientific Atlanta where he worked as a machinist.  He enjoyed playing baseball, gardening, reading and walking. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Mr. Hopkins was predeceased by his wife Sadie M. Hopkins in 2003 and by his brother James Hopkins Jr., sister  Frances Bledsoe and sister-in-law Alene Brown. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Tim and Judy Hopkins of Monroe, daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Mac Hays of Mansfield, sister Betty Edwards, brother Bobby Hopkins, sister-in-law Betty and Albert Norton, brothers-in-law Tony and Joyce Morton and Raymond Brown, all of Covington, 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Hopkins will be held on Tuesday January 12, 2010 at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Harwell-Wheeler Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Dunton officiating. Interment will follow at Covington Mill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 6154 Collins Street, Covington, Ga. 30014.
