Allen Baxley Mallett, Sr., age 89, of Covington, passed away May 9, 2014. A decorated WWII veteran, he was a survivor of The Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Mr. Baxley was an insurance executive with 25 years of service to Aetna Casualty and later started his own successful insurance agency in Stuart, Florida. Retiring to Covington, he became involved with the Newton Medical Center Auxiliary, Newton County Elections Board, Newton County Tax Adjustment Division and Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid boater and enjoyed gardening and traveling. Mr. Mallett was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean (Martin) Mallett.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Allen B. Mallett, Jr. and Pamela J. Etu, William T. and Candace Mallett, Edward D. and Georgiana Mallett; grandchildren, April Mallett, Peter Mallett, Daniel Mallett, David Mallett, Chris Mallett; great-granddaughter, Maddie Cournoyer; sister, Louise Mutimer.
A Graveside Service for Mr. Mallett will be held Sunday, May 18, 2014, 2:00 p.m., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington, with Dr. Susan Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, Saturday, May 17 from 6 – 8 p.m. Flowers are accepted or contributions in Mr. Mallett’s memory may be made to Disabled American Veterans Memorial Program, P.O.
