"Mauw Burlee"
Mother Burda Lee Marks was born January 11, 1917 to the late Mr. & Mrs. John Henry (Emma) Williams. She was the second of three children, Hulon and Johnny preceded her in death.
Affectionately known as "Mauw Burlee", she was raised and educated in Newton County (Lequinn Community) where she would walk several miles in the bitter cold to a one room school house.
On December 31, 1934, she married the late Mr. James Oscar Marks. To this union seven children were born; Rose, Willie James, Sarah, Charlie, Walter, Ann and Connie. She was preceded in death by her son, Mr. Willie James Marks and grandson, Mr. Hanford Marks.
"Mauw Burlee", accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. As a leader in the church, she was very devoted to serving God, the Senior Choir, Mother Board, Kitchen Committee and various other Auxiliaries that she was blessed to serve on.
Mother Marks was very active in her community and the school system. She held the office of Treasurer of the East Newton Elementary School PTA until the school integrated. She was instrumental in organizing the Jamestown Community floral club, became Activity Director of the Communities Summer Youth Program, President of the Harvest Hill 4-H Community Outreach (under the direction of Mrs. Lottie Johnson) and the Macedonia Community Society.
On December 15, 2014, Mother Burda Lee Marks received her blessing and departed her life to be with her heavenly father.
She leaves to continue life; children, Mr. & Mrs. Hubert (Rose) Garrett, Muncie, Indiana, Mrs. Sarah Weaver, Mr. Charlie N.
