Milton A. McLaney (“Coach Mac”), a long time, well known resident of Covington, died August 17, 2010, at the age of 82. He attended West Georgia College prior to serving in the United States Navy during World War II. After the War, he attended and graduated from the University of Alabama with a Degree in Education, then earned his Masters of Education Degree from Mercer University. He was a dedicated educator with Newton County Schools for 27 years, and was referred to as “Coach Mac” by many former students and players. An active member of the community, he and his wife, Jo, were the owners of Covington Flower Shop, a family business, where he could be seen daily until the sale of the shop in 2003. Mr. McLaney was also a member of the Covington Kiwanis Club, and a member of First United Methodist Church for many years. Mr. McLaney is survived by his wife of 59 years, Josie (Jo) Embry McLaney; daughters and sons-in-law, Marci McLaney Hutcheson and husband, Butch Hutcheson of Jesup, Susan (Sissy) McLaney Skipper and husband Ron Skipper, of Shady Dale; grandchildren, Ryan Marks, Allen and Natalie Martin, James and Alison (Marks) Brown, Lisa Martin Morrow, all of Covington, Steven Dobbs, Scott Dobbs, both of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Collin and Emily Marks, Austin Marks, Colton Mitchell, Asa Brown, Tanner Martin, Kennady Martin, Kambrie Morrow, all of Covington; sister and brother-in-law, Eloise and James Veal of Lake Panasoffke, FL; a number of nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service for Mr. McLaney will be held Thursday, August 19, 2010, 3:00 PM, at the Access Road Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, with Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath, officiating. Family will host a gathering for friends at the funeral home immediately following the funeral service. Interment at Lawnwood Memorial Park will be private.
