Mary LaVerne “Bernie” Clement, age 77, of Mansfield, passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2021. She was born June 17, 1944 in Austell, GA, grew up in Atlanta, and graduated from Sylvan Hills High School. The daughter of a land surveyor and a seamstress, Ms. Clement was a woman of quiet but passionate faith, living a life of good example that touched everyone around her. She loved gospel and country music and sang in church choirs most of her life. Her mother taught her to sew and she developed a love of handicrafts that lasted her whole life. She often sewed clothes for her family and herself. She also was proficient at crochet, tatting, and quilting. She loved gardening, cooking, and traveling. Most of all, she loved her dear family and friends and inspired them to be their best. Ms. Clement was of the Baptist Faith and a member of the First Baptist Church of Redan for many years and more recently of Mansfield Baptist Church.
Her high school math teacher once told her that girls can’t do math. She proved him wrong many times over. She led a successful career at the Internal Revenue Service for 31 years
Retiring in 2016 as a tax advocate helping people who were having trouble with their taxes. She often helped family, friends, and church members by volunteering to help them file their tax returns. She also served as a church treasurer for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arlo Turner Pike and Mary Pike (Glore) and her dear sister and best friend, Arlene Bishop (Pike).
Ms. Clement is survived by her sons Larry Clement (Debbie) of Newborn and David Clement (Lori Williamson) of St. Paul. MN; 3 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; along with a host of other family and close friends.
A Memorial Service for Ms. Clement will be held at 11 o’clock Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at the Chapel of J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home with Dr. Jeffrey Perkins officiating. J.C.
