Boyd-Born Funeral Home

Laura Lucille Johnson went home to be with the Lord four days shy of her 93rd birthday at 12:15 p.m. on July 4, 2016 while surrounded by her family. Laura was born July 8, 1923 in Akron, Ohio to Robert and Christina (Rumschlag) Bryant. Laura had three sisters and one brother. Pauline Dinuoscio survives. Brother Robert Bryant and sisters Roberta Price and Martha McWilliams are deceased. Laura was married on July 20, 1950 to Norris Johnson in Conyers, Georgia, and he preceded her in death in 2012. Surviving are three children; Ruth (John) Underwood of Akron, Ohio, Katherine (Ronald) Griffith of Russells Point, Ohio, and Vivian (Roy) Collins of Marion, Ohio. Grandchildren are Jeff Murphy of St Petersburg, Florida, Cynthia Haught of Akron, Ohio, Lita (Jeff) Johnson of Stanton, Kentucky, Jennifer (Darrell) Ramey of Marion, Ohio, Christopher Collins and Clay Collins both of Marion, Ohio. Two grandsons preceded her in death: Greg Underwood and Scott Murphy. She also had four step grandchildren; Sue (Rick) Knotts and Nancy Burkhardt, both of Marion, Ohio, William (Mickie) Griffith of Victorville, California and Rodney (Tracy) Griffith of Middletown, Rhode Island. There are nine great-grandchildren and nine step great-grandchildren. She has one great-great-grandson and nine step great-great-grandchildren.

Laura worked all her life; from working at Goodyear Air Dock during WWII, to working on one of the early computers at Goodrich in Akron. The family moved to Ohio in 1956. When her husband was transferred to Marion in 1961, Laura worked in succession at Plastic Film, Marion County Bank, and Lerner's Store. She retired from General Telephone Company as an operator. Laura ensured her three girls were brought up in a church wherever they lived. In Akron she attended Millheim Baptist Church. After moving to Marion she attended the Caledonia Church of Christ and was baptized on Nov. 3, 1965. She attended Mount Vernon Avenue Church of Christ in Marion before her admission to Marion Manor Nursing Home.

Calling hours will be held in the Boyd-Born Funeral Home on Thursday, July 7, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. Pastor Jeff Bush will conduct the funeral service in the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m., with burial to follow in the Marion Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Marion Manor Activities Fund, Marion General Hospital Hospice Program, or to the Mount Vernon Avenue Church of Christ.

Thanks are being given to the Marion General Hospital Hospice Nurses for all of their concern and care of Laura during her last days. Truly this is an outstanding team. Thanks to all of the staff at Marion Manor for caring for our mother so excellently during her stay at the facility. Everyone was great to Laura and our deep appreciation is given to all of these remarkable individuals. Truly you are special.
