Mrs. Inez Phillips Bowen, 88, of Covington, died Oct. 9. The daughter of Oscar and Omie McCart Phillips of Porterdale, Mrs. Bowen was a direct descendant of Noah Phillips who established the first textile mill in Newton County at Cedar Shoals (now Porterdale). She was an avid golfer, owned and operated a hair salon in Covington for many years, and was a member of the North Covington United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Joel T. Bowen Sr. and an infant son Billy Thomas Bowen.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Mildred and Wilson Martin of Inverness, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law J. Thomas and Nancy Bowen of Cornelia; grandsons Chadwick Martin of Lebanon, Tenn., Judson Martin (Misti) of Ballground, Thomas Shay Hopkins (Jeanette) of Atlanta, Jesse Bowen (Ginny) of Baltimore, Md., Toby Bowen (Mary Glenn) of Suwanee; four great-grandsons.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bowen will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 12, at the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, with the Rev. Michael Bell officiating, and interment following in Oxford Historical Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, from 12:30 to 2 p.m..
