George Marion Verhey of Conyers, GA died Thursday December 20, 2012 at his residence. He was born on April 5, 1918 in Pella, IA to James Henry and Laura Den Hartog Verhey. He served in the US Army in Italy during WW II as part of the 10th Mountain Division. During his career as a Construction Engineer George worked on projects such as Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, Atlanta Civic Center, Georgia World Congress Center, and various other buildings in the southeastern United States, primarily with Steel Incorporated in Scotdale, GA. He was a charter member of the Conyers Choral Guild. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Covington and was valued as a Bible teacher, spiritual leader, and was instrumental in founding and supporting several area churches prior to his membership at Zion Baptist Church. George was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and left an outstanding spiritual legacy to his entire family and community.
Mr. Verhey is survived by his wife of 50 years Helen Gilreath Verhey of Conyers, GA; daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Bob Anderson of Ekalaka, MT., son and daughter-in-law James G. and Marilyn Verhey of Marietta, GA; step-son Dan Bruce of Conyers, GA; four grandsons and their wives, fourteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his first wife Frances Burgess Verhey, parents James Henry and Laura Den Hartog Verhey, brother Keith Verhey, sister Rosa Jane Ettien.
Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday Dec. 28, in the chapel of Wheeler Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Anderson and Rev. Reese Sanders officiating.
