Mr. Charlie Lee "Whit" Bailey, 92, a lifelong resident of Covington died on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008. He was born in Newton County Feb. 17, 1916 to the late Oscar and Leila (Smith) Bailey. Mr. Bailey was a member of Lovejoy Methodist Church. He was a retired carpenter, a very good handyman and built his house on Green Street. He enjoyed watching and listening to the Atlanta Braves, gardening and doing yard work, and he also loved and enjoyed talking to people. Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mrs. Christine (Johnson) Bailey who died April 19, 2008, son David Bailey, Sr., brothers Felix and Chet Bailey, sisters Lucille Hammonds and Inez Hay.
Mr. Bailey is survived by son and daughter-in-law Doug and Lana Bailey of Conyers; sister Rosa Lee Poole; grandchildren Scott and Liz Bailey of Loganville, Shane and Cindy Bailey of Conyers, Slade Bailey of Atlanta, David Jr. and Jessica Bailey of Conyers; great grandchildren Amanda (Bailey) and Brent Chaffin of Broken Arrow, Okla., Chris Bailey of Loganville, Damian Bailey of Conyers; great-great grandchild Madison Chaffin of Broken Arrow, Okla.; several nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
The family received friends Saturday, Dec. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Wheeler Funeral Home, 11405 Brown Bridge Road, Covington, GA 30016. The funeral service for Mr. Bailey will be held today, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Wheeler Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Gravitt and Rev. Reese Sanders officiating. Pallbearers will be Scott, Shane, Slade and David Bailey, Charles Welborn and Dean Leonard. Interment will follow at Covington City Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Westbury Health and Rehab in Conyers, Ga.
