During his time at the Church of Covington, he sang in the choir, served as a care pastor, and was also an elder for several years. He was a devoted family man and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. In addition, he enjoyed camping and relaxing in the mountains. Smith was considered by many to be a true friend. Preceding him in death was his father, Bobby L. Smith, Sr.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Shirley Mahaffey Smith; son, Brian Scott Smith of Jersey; daughter and son-in-law, Carla and David Childress of Covington; grandchildren, Ashleigh Brooke Smith, Amber Michelle Rachels, Preston Childress; mother, Faye R. Smith of Covington; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Gail Smith of Covington, Mark and Stephanie Smith of Social Circle; sister and brother-in-law, Rosene and Barry Watts of Covington; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service for Smith will be held Friday, December 16, 2016, at noon, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Darrell Payne, Pastor David Payne, and Judy Sutton officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.
