Arthur L. “Art” Hargrove, Jr., age 91, of Covington, passed away March 13, 2011 at Walton Regional Medical Center in Monroe. A retired Chief Warrant Officer with twenty years of service in the U.S. Air Force, he was a World War II and Korean War Veteran. He was active at the local, district, state and national levels of the 4-H Clubs, and was a volunteer with the clubs for fifty years. Mr. Hargrove was co-founder and a charter member of the Salem Volunteer Fire Department, where he served his community for over thirty years as an Assistant Chief. He was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church for ten years, and was a founding parishioner of St. Augustine Catholic Church, where he served as music director. He was a talented singer, musician, artist, calligrapher and an avid genealogist. A gifted woodworker, one of his most cherished accomplishments was being involved with the original construction of the Monastery Of The Holy Spirit. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and patriot, Mr. Hargrove was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Mary Hargrove, parents, Arthur L., Sr. and Ruby Alice Walker Hargrove, and brothers and sisters, Clyde R. Hargrove, Lucy Ann Wilson, James W. Hargrove, William D. “Billy” Hargrove and Joseph “Jody” Hargrove. Surviving are his wife, Rosemary V. Hargrove; daughter and son-in-law, Arlene H. and Charles Woods of Covington; sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur Louis and Myra Hargrove, III, of Eatonton, Douglas Frank and Judy Hargrove of Covington; grandchildren, Arthur L Hargrove, IV and wife Jennifer, Chadwick B. Hargrove and wife Caroline, Matthew W. Hargrove and wife Melissa, Craig L. Hargrove and wife Maria, Jarrett D. Hargrove, Shawn T. Holmes and wife Victoria, Allen V. Holmes, David L. Holmes and wife Danielle, Aaron V. Holmes and wife Sara, and Amy H. Simpson and husband Keenan; 20 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Ruby Nell and Bill Bennett of Lilburn; step-daughter, Kathleen H. Collins of Loganville; step-sons and daughters-in-law, Victor A. and Glenda Holmes of Loganville, Thomas L. and Lynda Holmes of Oxford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, March 15, 2011, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Conyers, with Pastor Father John Kieran and Father Tim Gallager, officiating. A Reception will be held immediately following the service at St. Pius X Social Hall. Interment will take place at 1:00 PM in Lawnwood Memorial Park, Covington.
